Prague - This summer, construction will begin on a public restroom in Petřín park in the Strahov Gardens. The city hall also plans to renovate the Lobkovice Garden, the specific design of which is yet to be prepared. The spokesperson for the city hall, Vít Hofman, informed ČTK today. Last year and the year before, the city had the area around the Petřín lookout tower modified.
The new toilets are to be built in the Strahov Garden on the site of wooden buildings that were demolished in 2015. Originally, the city intended to construct a building with facilities for green maintenance and an information center, but later abandoned the plan and in 2016 allowed the construction of a rest area with a drinking fountain and a bench. The park at Petřín was connected to the gardens of Strahov Monastery in 2016.
Now, the city hall will add a small structure with public restrooms and a smaller facility for maintenance. The spokesperson added that the restroom building will be partially recessed into the ground and designed in such a way as to not disrupt the view from the upper part of the garden. At the entrance from Vlašská Street, the current asphalt will be replaced with paving.
In addition, Prague plans modifications to the nearby Lobkovice Garden. Hofman stated that, first and foremost, it is necessary to bring water from the existing tunnels to the surface so that it can be used for irrigation rather than draining uselessly into the sewer system as has been the case until now. According to the spokesperson, the upper part of the garden will remain unchanged except for the modification of the pathway. "Possible changes in the lower part of the garden will be the subject of detailed planning, which is yet to be processed," he added.
The planned steps follow previous modifications to Petřín. The year before last, the city had toilets built near the lookout tower, and last year, the paths around the Petřín landmark were reconstructed and new furniture was installed.
The park area by the lookout tower was originally modified as a pilgrimage site in 1936. Since 1891, the lookout tower has stood there as a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. At over 65.5 meters tall, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Prague. At the same time, the first funicular railway to Petřín was created.
