Olomouc - On the outskirts of Olomouc, near the exit road to Mohelnice, hundreds of new apartments will be constructed in the coming years. Private investors are preparing the construction in the Pražská area. Their plans include building family houses as well as apartment buildings, said Mayor Martin Novotný to the journalists today. There is an urgent shortage of land for housing in the regional city, which is forcing people to build in the surrounding villages. Houses for residential purposes are expected to be built on both sides of the exit road to Mohelnice. In the western part of the area, the construction is being prepared by the Prague company KRR Development, which already owns about two-thirds of the required land. The remaining part, approximately 2.3 hectares, is expected to be acquired from the city for more than 23 million crowns. "The investor plans to build row houses, small apartments for students and young families, and also a high-rise building approximately twenty stories high in several phases," the mayor stated. He added that the project could provide housing for 1,500 to 1,600 people in the area. On the eastern side of the area, the Prague company Orange Book wants to create a residential quarter of apartment buildings. This company also already owns part of the land in the site. "The city has about 40,000 square meters of space in the area. The council approved the plan to sell the investor roughly half of it. However, the company should invest in the entire plot and hand over the public areas to the city for free," said Deputy Mayor Hana Tesařová. The Olomouc city council has not been building apartment buildings for several years and has left their construction to the private sector. Housing development in the regional city is limited by the lack of plots. A disadvantage for Olomouc in this area is that there is quality agricultural land surrounding it, which is protected by the Agricultural Land Fund.
