Students worked on the footbridge construction in front of the Faculty of Architecture building, where they presented the project to the public on Thursday, January 18, in the presence of the faculty leadership, the rector of CTU, and representatives from the Krkonošsko National Park Administration. Before the snow melts in the mountains, the footbridges will be on display at the Dejvice campus of CTU.

The collaboration between the faculty and the oldest Czech national park began in the spring of 2017 when architect Hana Seho reached out to the KRNAP administration. "The greatest joy for an architect comes when they see their own idea realized, when they can verify how each material behaves, how it looks, and smells. We wanted to get ahead of time and give our students this empowering experience while they are still in school," recalls the head of the FA CTU studio. The joint project seemed beneficial for both sides, so the KRNAP administration identified bridges in poor technical condition on its territory, which it would have to invest in repairing anyway, and instead of a classic repair, offered students a creative space for their realization.

"We liked the outreach of this project, where students have the opportunity to realize their design from the beginning to the actual installation phase at the site. The Krkonošsko National Park has a unique position in the context of the Czech Republic, and we are interested in ensuring that the structures we create here are of high quality," explains Luděk Khol, deputy director of the Krkonošsko National Park Administration.

The footbridge design was offered to students as a semester project from five studios at the Department of Design II. FA CTU and a total of 30 students participated in it. Each team selected one from several initial designs, which they developed into execution and production documentation and constructed with assistance from professionals - engineers and craftsmen.

The result is two wooden footbridges - over the Medvědí stream near Medvědí boudy above Špindlerův Mlýn (studio Kordovský - Vrbata) and Renner's stream at U Kostela in Malá Úpa (studio Zavřel - Jelínek), two steel footbridges Klínová cesta I. (studio MáMA) and Klínová cesta II. (studio Hlaváček - Čeněk) on the path from Špindlerův Mlýn to Klínové Boudy and a footbridge at Hrnčířské Boudy (studio Seho - Světlík), which combines wood and steel cables with connections.

Since most selected locations are difficult to access, the footbridges are designed to be disassemblable, easily transportable, and can be assembled without the use of heavy machinery. Each design is specific, and each team faced different challenges.

Two of the new footbridges will be located on the blue hiking trail leading from Špindlerův Mlýn to Klínové Boudy. They are located about 200 meters apart and both have a simple steel structure.

The footbridges in the Krkonošsko National Park are an excellent example of the "learning by doing" teaching method, or learning through practice. The goal is not only to teach architecture students to work with a chisel, saw, or drill, but to give them responsibility for their decisions and experience that the essence of success is teamwork.
