Brno - The Moravian Library would like to establish a new depository in Brno. A certain portion of its collection is currently located outside Brno, and the books have to be constantly transported, which causes wear and tear. For relocating part of the out-of-Brno depositories, library staff have already selected a suitable building in close proximity to its current location on Kounicova Street. The building, which is owned by a private company, could be purchased by the state.

The library's plan has been supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance. Discussions are ongoing regarding the amount of state funding for this purpose, with a decision expected by the end of April, Ludmila Kadrnková from the Ministry of Culture’s press department told ČTK today.
The amount for which the building could be acquired has not yet been disclosed by the management of the Moravian Library. "It would not be tactical to disclose the price in advance," said library director Jaromír Kubíček to ČTK.
However, according to him, the costs for the actual outfitting of the building should not be high. "We have shelves and not much more is needed," Kubíček believes. The establishment of the new depository would also bring significant savings in costs associated with the constant transportation of books to distant depositories and back. Titles specifically from the facilities in Blansko and Znojemsko should be relocated. Foreign newspapers would likely remain in their place in Vyškov. The capacity of the planned depository should be 1.2 million volumes, which would provide the library with a reserve of about 50 years.
The Moravian Library has been located in its new building on Kounicova Street since 2001, which cost approximately half a billion koruna to construct. The new building was created because the spaces of the original headquarters were no longer sufficient. The library's collection consists of more than four million volumes, which measured end-to-end spans over 32 kilometers. Every year, about one kilometer of new books is added.
