Prague - Minister of Culture Alena Hanáková, nominated to the government by TOP 09, could be replaced by the former dean of the Music and Dance Faculty of AMU, Jiří Hlaváč. There has been speculation for some time that Hanáková will leave the cabinet.
Minister Hanáková, who has faced criticism from opposition and professional circles for her performance since taking office, stated that she cannot say whether the information about her replacement is true or not. "When I know, I will definitely let you know," she told the server.
Hanáková is a member of the movement Mayors and Independents, with whom TOP 09 has long cooperated regarding Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg. The head of the movement and the parliamentary club of TOP 09 and Mayors, Petr Gazdík, reminded that only Schwarzenberg and he have the authority in this matter. They reportedly have not spoken yet.
Later, he told journalists that their meeting, to which Hanáková is also invited, will take place on Wednesday. "Until then, it is premature to draw any conclusions. The situation at the Ministry of Culture is not changing in any way," he added.
In addition to Hlaváč, former head of Czech Television and AMU Ivo Mathé, MP Stanislav Polčák, and senator Jiří Šesták are also mentioned as candidates for the ministerial position, but a source from the governing coalition confirmed that Hlaváč is the favorite. Hlaváč declined to comment.
Speculation about Hanáková's departure from the government is not new. In February, Mathé announced to the daily Mladá fronta Dnes that Schwarzenberg had discussed a possible entry into the government with him. The Foreign Minister then had to smooth over the situation and met with Hanáková. After the meeting, Hanáková stated that the head of the government party had not criticized her work, and Schwarzenberg himself noted that he had no objections to Hanáková.
