Prague - Minister of Culture Václav Riedlbauch promises that he will announce the name of the new director of the National Gallery in Prague (NG) today. In the afternoon, he will still meet with the commission members who already evaluated candidates for the position in mid-April. However, the minister only invited domestic experts who made up two-thirds of the commission.
According to unofficial information, the commission recommended appointing art historian Jiří Fajt as director, but the minister conducted talks not only with him but also with other candidates - he reportedly wanted to find out how they would potentially form a broader leadership for the gallery.
The ministry has not yet published the list of candidates for the director position. Riedlbauch stated that he also considers the director of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, Marek Pokorný, and financier Vladimír Rösela, as his favorites.
The competition for the director of NG was announced by the minister in February and originally mentioned that he would like to know the name of the new director before the elections. However, after the commission meeting, which reportedly agreed on Fajt with a vote of 10:2, the minister has not yet made a decision.
It is also unclear when the new director could assume office. Long-time NG director Milan Knížák has repeatedly stated that he would like to remain at the head of NG until the end of next year.
