The Upper Promenade of Úpa in Trutnov will come to life with lectures on architecture and woodworking for a week.
As part of the workshop, new wooden furniture or installations will be created here.

This year, the first annual Urban Interventions is taking place in Trutnov, with the main goal of identifying problematic areas in the city and proposing solutions that could enhance them and improve the daily lives of residents. A week-long workshop is also part of the event, during which furniture or artistic installations made of wood will be designed and realized along the banks of the Úpa River. The workshop will take place from July 16 to July 23, and anyone can participate on-site.
Every city has areas designated for technical infrastructure. In Trutnov, a heavily used path for pedestrians and cyclists runs alongside the banks of the Úpa River. Until recently, it was separated from the river by a bulky steam pipeline, which has now been buried, allowing for an unobstructed view of the water surface and access to it. However, few people take the opportunity to get closer to the river or simply sit in the grass; most seem to have gotten used to walking by without stopping.
During one week in July, part of the riverbank will come alive with a workshop during which new wooden furniture or artistic installations will be created. It will be made by architecture students in collaboration with locals and experts who will come to lecture and consult on the emerging projects. In the first few days, students will acclimate to the new environment and create designs, which they will then manufacture by hand in the remaining days. At the end of the workshop, there will be a ceremonial handover of the created objects to the city and a concluding celebration. Locals can look forward to interesting lectures from architects and representatives of civic initiatives about public space, small architecture, and especially how small municipalities and larger cities can start to change even in our country – among others, the former deputy mayor of Vodňany will visit to share his experiences. Students will welcome local help during public consultations and the production of the objects. Throughout the event, the process of their work will be on display from proposal to realization – all in one week directly on the banks of the Úpa.
The goal of the workshop is to spark a discussion among locals, stimulate interest, and revitalize the Trutnov riverbank with small ‘interventions.’ The process and results of the workshop will be presented along with other projects of Urban Interventions Trutnov at a final exhibition, which will take place in October 2016 in the city center.

Urban Interventions is an open project that was created in 2007 in the Bratislava studio Vallo Sadovský. After considerable success in Bratislava, the project was repeated in Prague, Brno, Jablonec nad Nisou, Kladno, and other cities. This year, it is also taking place in Trutnov thanks to the TUarch association. Urban Interventions Trutnov are held with the support of the Trutnov city, with the main partner of the workshop being the Kasper company.
