Brno - Masaryk University in Brno today ceremoniously opened another part of the newly constructed campus in Bohunice, which will primarily serve medicine, natural sciences, and sports studies. The so-called blue phase of construction included 12 new buildings, including the biomodel pavilion and a central library. It cost 1.5 billion crowns. Two phases remaining to complete the campus will cost the university an additional 1.75 billion crowns. The new library can hold 500,000 volumes and can accommodate up to 560 people studying at one time. According to MU Vice Rector Antonín Slaný, the library building will be the heart of the campus. It has been named after Brno entrepreneur Pavel Kohn, whose heirs donated the land for the construction of the university complex. The school also opened the entrance hall of the campus today and a glass footbridge over Kamenáčky Street, which will feature refreshments and a café with a view of Brno. There is also a passageway leading to the neighboring Faculty Hospital Brno. In the new academic year, which began today, approximately 2,000 students will study on the campus. The university campus began construction in 2004. Four pavilions of the Integrated Laboratories of Biomedical Technologies have been functioning in the area for some time. The total cost of constructing the entire university campus for 5,000 students and 500 university staff will exceed five billion crowns. Most of the funding was obtained by the school through a loan from the European Investment Bank. Construction of the remaining two phases, which include 19 buildings, has not yet started; the school is waiting for approval of contracts with suppliers from the Ministry of Education. According to university spokesperson Tereza Fojtová, the completion of construction is still planned for next year.
