Prague - This summer, a long-prepared reconstruction of the monumentally protected water tower will begin in Letná. The repair will cost 41.6 million crowns, of which 12 million will be paid by the city council, said the deputy mayor Pavel Vyhnánek in response to a query from ČTK. The reconstruction was originally supposed to start last autumn. However, the leadership of Prague 7 had the project changed, as it reportedly showed shortcomings, causing a delay in the start of work. The repaired tower will serve for children's leisure activities.

"The water tower is the family silver of Prague 7 and moreover, it houses leisure associations. It is therefore necessary to do everything possible to ensure that all construction interventions are planned as sensitively as possible and in accordance with the requirements of all concerned state administration bodies," said Vyhnánek.
According to him, the adjustments to the project were entrusted to the renowned architect Petr Hájek, who has numerous significant and award-winning realizations to his credit, such as the modifications to Jiřské náměstí at Prague Castle or the reconstruction and completion of the Archdiocesan Museum in Olomouc. The tower's repair will affect the facades as well as the interior spaces, utilities, heating, sewage, and air conditioning. The surrounding land will also be modified. The monument will serve the House of Children and Youth.
The neo-Renaissance water tower was completed in 1888 according to the design of architect Jindřich Fialka. The construction was carried out by the company of Karel Hübschmann and František Schlaffer. The tower was part of the waterworks complex that supplied water to the upper part of Holešovice and Bubeneč. It was decommissioned from waterworks operations in 1913. Subsequently, apartments for waterworks employees were built in its individual floors. Later, part of the tower was used as storage. In the 1970s, the underground four-chamber cylindrical water tank and pumping station were demolished. The tower has been monumentally protected since 1992.
