Lednice (Břeclavsko) - The Castle Greenhouse in Lednice, Břeclav region, which is one of the unique European monuments, needs an urgent roof reconstruction. Over the past six months, the roof has been torn off by storms twice. The building is temporarily covered. Rainwater is leaking into the building that houses about 250 species of the rarest trees from all over the world. This was stated today by the administrator of the Lednice castle garden, Oto Bernad. The costs for the roof repair have not yet been estimated.
The roof will need to be torn off and redone in copper. "We will do everything we can to have everything in order again by autumn. Hopefully, we will manage to secure funding from emergency funds," said the administrator.
The palm greenhouse was commissioned by the owners of the Lednice estate from the House of Liechtenstein in 1835. Like the entire Lednice-Valtice complex, the winter garden is built in the English style and is one of the largest greenhouses of its kind in Europe.
The structure has a cast-iron framework. Inside, it is supported by 44 columns resembling massive bamboo stalks. The glass shell of the building is made up of more than 52,000 pieces of hand-cut glass scales.
The demanding reconstruction of the greenhouse was completed five years ago and cost 40 million crowns. Only the roof was not repaired. The reconstruction was awarded the Grand Prix Award by the Czech Architects' Association in 2003. About 80,000 tourists visit the greenhouse each year.
