Hradec Králové - The new footbridge over the Orlice River in Hradec Králové is complete and will be ceremoniously opened to pedestrians and cyclists on Thursday at 10:00 PM. The steel bridge, located at the site of a former ferry, will serve as an important part of the main network of cycle paths in this city of one hundred thousand and will safely connect the university campus with the historical center. This was announced today by the spokesperson of the city hall, Magdaléna Vlčková. The city is looking for a name for the bridge, and the public can also get involved. The approximately 75-meter-long and 4.5-meter-wide bridge crosses the Orlice between Jiráskovy sady and the buildings of Hradec Králové University. Currently, cyclists must travel from the center to the university via a nearby, heavily trafficked narrow bridge. "We have managed to complete one of the practical and necessary constructions in the city that will serve all age groups," said Mayor Zdeněk Fink. The bridge project was designed for the city by renowned Czech architect Mirko Baum, who works in Germany. The footbridge, costing 26 million crowns, was built by the company M-Silnice. Approximately 85 percent of the costs will be covered by grants from European Union funds. Proposals for naming the bridge can be sent to anketa@mmhk.cz. "About seventy proposals have already arrived, among which Orlička, Orličanka, and Studentská lávka dominate. One of the authors suggests naming the work 'Lávka zamilovaných' and proposes attaching a padlock to the bridge and throwing the key into the Orlice," Vlčková stated.
