Prague - The planned footbridge between Prague's Holešovice and Karlín will be named Štvanická footbridge. It will be named after the island over which it will run. This is stated in the document that will be discussed by Prague councilors on Monday. Until now, the footbridge was informally referred to by an abbreviation created from parts of the names of the two districts, namely HolKa. The construction of the footbridge is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 11. The bridge will facilitate access to the island and will provide another connection between the districts. The construction will cost 298 million crowns.

The proposal to name the footbridge is being presented to the councilors according to the materials due to the planned start of construction. "And also for the reason that the name is commonly used during construction to avoid the use of provisional names," it is stated in the materials. The name has already been approved by the municipal toponymic commission.

The footbridge to Karlín will have its entrance on the Holešovice side of the Vltava River precisely on Bubenské embankment in front of the gate to Prague Market. In Karlín, it will connect to the cycle path running along the flood barrier on Rohanský embankment. The footbridge will span 38 meters between Karlín and Štvanice and 149 meters between Štvanice and Holešovice. According to earlier statements from the municipality, the construction should take 14 months.

Currently, people can only walk from Karlín to Holešovice across the busy Hlávkův bridge or detour through Rohanský island and Libeňský bridge. They can also use the ferry during the season. Access to Štvanice can only be achieved from Hlávkův bridge or by ferry.
