Domenico Martinelli

Brno - Art and history lovers from the Czech Republic and Austria will be able to commemorate the work of the prominent Baroque architect Domenico Martinelli (1650-1718) at several cultural events in the coming days. His buildings can be found not only in Vienna, in Western Europe, but also in Moravia.

"Martinelli is one of those who brought High Baroque to Central Europe. The buildings he designed can be found mainly in the Slavkov and Uherské Hradiště regions," said Jiří Kroupa today to ČTK, who lectures on art history at Masaryk University in Brno.
The Italian cleric and builder, who taught architecture at the prestigious Roman Academy di San Luca, was able to create not only residential buildings, including the castle in Slavkov u Brna, but also churches, and even uniquely designed farm buildings.
In Moravia, Martinelli worked for Count Dominik Ondřej Kounic and Prince Liechtenstein. The builder was meticulous. He designed the Liechtenstein Palace in Vienna, where a café is named after him. During its construction, he temporarily left Vienna. When he returned and discovered that the details on the palace were not precisely according to the plan, he wrote a letter complaining about how his work was being destroyed. He then had the document posted around the city.
Martinelli's legacy will be commemorated on Wednesday in Rousínov in the Vyškov region by participants of the conference "The Face of the Genius of Baroque Architecture." Several concerts will be held in Prague and Vienna in his honor.
More about the builder and the project commemorating his work can be found on the website www.domenico-martinelli.com.
