Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnovsko) - Builders are currently completing the steel structure of the upper station of the new cable car on Sněžka in the Krkonoš Mountains. It should be finished by the end of November, when the work at the mountain top will conclude before the winter break. The mechanical part of the technology for the new cable car from the company Leitner is already in place at the upper station. The current inversion weather is favorable for the builders, and the construction of the upper station is going according to schedule, said Vladimíra Baťková, spokesperson for the construction company BAK, today. The builders are also working on the transfer station on Růžová Hora and the lower station in Pec pod Sněžkou. "At Růžová Hora, we are working on the foundation of the station. At the lower station, we are finishing the monolithic walls up to the level of the first above-ground floor, as well as doing waterproofing and drainage," said Baťková. The builders have completed most of the foundations for the new columns in the lower section. The construction of the lower station, which is closer to the center of Pec pod Sněžkou than the original one, is delayed due to the challenging rock foundation work. "We will catch up on the delay because we will start a month earlier in the spring, in mid-March," said Baťková. After the winter break, the builders would like to start on Růžová Hora and Sněžka in the second half of April. During the construction of the upper station and the pouring of the foundations, the builders must use a helicopter. "For example, last week, the helicopter transported the station structure to Sněžka," said the spokesperson. The helicopter operation is permitted until the end of November. The construction of the cable car began in earnest this spring, and it is expected to start operating in spring 2014. The old cable car was decommissioned at the beginning of September. The new cable car, costing around 300 million crowns, will feature more comfortable cabins instead of the existing open chairs for two passengers. The hourly capacity of the cable car will remain at 250 people, but it should be better resistant to wind. Approximately 200,000 people used the services of the old cable car built in 1949 every year, with about half of them reaching Sněžka. The investor for the cable car is the town of Pec pod Sněžkou, which has received a grant from EU funds for the construction.
