Karlovy Vary - This year, Karlovy Vary will complete the renovation of the Market Colonnade. The last, fifth phase of repairs will be paid for by the city from its own funds and will cost nearly one million korunas, said the Deputy Mayor of Karlovy Vary, Jiří Klsák (KOA), to reporters today.
The Market Colonnade is an extensive structure, and the city has been drawing from the program for the regeneration of urban heritage zones for its repairs. The work has been divided into phases over four years. "But because some work was more demanding, there arose a need to address it with a fifth phase." said Klsák.
However, while the previous phases, whose costs were usually around half to one million korunas, were largely funded by subsidies, this year's phase will be covered by the city itself.
On the wooden Market Colonnade, the city repaired coatings and damaged parts of the structures. The colonnade, like many other buildings in Karlovy Vary, was designed by architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, is built in the Swiss style, and is richly decorated with carvings. It stands on the site of the oldest original spa in the city.
