Brno - Construction has begun in Brno for a headquarters designated for companies in the field of advanced technologies. It will be located near the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) and four other research centers, allowing businesses to collaborate closely with Brno scientists. At the same time, the building will offer laboratories for their own research and development, said the spokesperson for the South Moravian Regional Office, Denisa Kapitančiková. The building, named CEITEC Science Park, will cost 383 million CZK and will be managed by the South Moravian Innovation Center.
The South Moravian Region is contributing 96 million CZK to the construction, with the remaining funds covered by EU grants. "The South Moravian Region is building the spaces primarily for companies in the fields of advanced materials, nanotechnology, and microtechnology. These sectors are the domain of CEITEC, the SIX Alisi center, AdMaS, and the Center for Material Research," said Kapitančiková. All the mentioned firms are located near the new area in the Brno district of Medlánky.
In recent years, several major research centers have been established in Brno. Representatives of the regional administration have previously stated that they want to make Brno "the second Silicon Valley." The South Moravian Innovation Center, which will manage the new spaces, focuses on connecting the scientific and business spheres, supporting collaboration between industry, research institutions, and public administration. It currently oversees about 50 companies as part of another project.
According to plans, the first companies could move into the new spaces in July 2014. "The region expects new jobs with high added value, further development of technological businesses, and the creation of an attractive environment for quality investments from foreign companies," stated Václav Božek (CSSD), the deputy of the governor, during today's ceremonial groundbreaking.
