Brno - The equestrian statue of Jošt of Luxembourg in Brno will rise directly from the pavement of Moravské náměstí. The city leadership announced the results of the competition, and the proposal by painter and sculptor Jaroslav Róna took first place. According to Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD), the statue could be erected in the square as early as next year, concluding the repairs of the site. The competition for the statue of the Moravian Margrave was announced by the city of Brno several years ago, but the council did not like the winning design and did not commission the creation of the work. Róna's winning proposal combines the traditional genre of the equestrian statue with modern artistic forms. Some elements are oversized, giving the statue a dynamic expression. There will be no traditional pedestal; the statue will rise directly from the pavement. "The statue is very successfully rendered, and I myself also voted for it," said the mayor. The city will try to allocate funds for the construction of the statue in the budget for next year. The total costs are 6.8 million crowns, with 1.5 million being provided to the city by a foundation. Currently, there are three allegorical elements according to Plato on Moravské náměstí, namely Justice, Temperance, and Prudence. The fourth allegory, Courage, will be represented by the statue of Jošt, which also refers to a figure associated with the history of Brno. Jošt of Luxembourg (1351 to 1411) was the Moravian Margrave and later also a Roman King. During his reign, he rebuilt the mint in Brno and was known for his scholarship and erudition. According to historians, he was one of the greatest politicians ever born in Moravia and did not hesitate to change sides and opinions to achieve his goals.
