Ivančice (Brno Region) - Ivančice in the Brno Region wants to renovate the dilapidated synagogue. The town needs 40 million crowns for the project. By October, it will apply for subsidies. From the former Jewish shrine, which was once one of the largest prayer houses of its kind in Moravia, a cultural center is to be established. This was stated today by Mayor Vojtěch Adam.
"We are counting on having an information center, a large community hall where weddings could take place, and we would like to create an exhibition about the history of the town in the gallery,” the mayor stated.
The town hall has been considering the renovation of the synagogue for years. It will seek state subsidies and funds from the European Union. The city leadership hopes to gain support for the project from the Jewish community as well.
The Ivančice synagogue was built in the 19th century. Its poor condition has been attributed to Nazism and later communism. According to experts, completely inappropriate columns were installed in the interior of the building. Its architectural appearance has also been disrupted by other insensitive modifications.
The former Jewish prayer house previously served as a storage facility for exhibits of the Museum of Brno, which hosted exhibitions in one of its halls. The depot, however, was moved to Rajhrad in the past. The synagogue has been completely unused for almost two years now.
