Hradec Králové - The town hall in Hradec Králové is preparing an expensive reconstruction of 28th October Square in the city center. Based on the submitted architectural designs, it is expected that the repair will cost the municipal treasury between 60 and 70 million crowns. The construction is set to begin no earlier than 2010. This was stated today by the town hall deputy Josef Malíř.

Architects submitted over twenty proposals to the town hall, and the winning solution will be decided by the councilors at a meeting at the end of September. The city leadership prefers designs that include sufficient greenery in the square. Parking spaces for cars will disappear from the square.
The city has been considering the reconstruction since the early 1990s. The then study included the construction of a fast food outlet in the square, but this met with a wave of protests from the residents. Now no new building will rise in the square.
The Hradec town hall will invest tens of millions of crowns into the repairs of the square. Last summer, it completed the renovation of the Small Square in the historic center, which cost over 40 million crowns. The city is also preparing to repair the Large Square, which is expected to start by the end of 2010. The cheapest option for the repair is estimated at approximately 80 million crowns. By autumn this year, builders are also expected to complete the adjustments to Riegrovo Square in front of the Czech Railways station.
