Hradec Králové - Plans for the restoration of the historic northern terraces in Hradec Králové will be developed by the Prague studios Projektil architects in collaboration with the studio a05. This team composition won the competition announced by the city, out of ten candidates. The costs for repairing the terraces and the adjacent Žižkov Gardens could reach up to 80 million crowns. The city aims to obtain a grant for the restoration from European Union programs after 2014, as stated by the mayor's assistant Jindřich Vedlich (TOP 09). Ateliéry Projektil and a05, according to him, respected the original concept of the park by architect František Thomayer from 1905. "Their project also fell within the cost limit of 80 million crowns," Vedlich said. Projektil, along with a05, has newly resolved access to the park from the historic center while also shielding the park from the busy ČSA street. Projektil previously designed a scientific library in Hradec Králové, which received the Construction of the Year award in the Czech Republic in 2009. The northern terraces, which stand on the site of the former city walls, are in need of repair according to the city hall. "Surveys have shown that they are in much worse condition than was thought," Vedlich said. Although there is no immediate danger of the terraces collapsing, the city prudently closed some connections on the terraces last June. In Hradec Králové, builders completed repairs on the terraces next to the brewery stairs last year, for which the city paid about 18 million crowns. In October, the city opened the southern terraces after repairs costing 54 million crowns, where a relaxation zone was created. This year, repairs are also planned for the part of the former city walls near Adalbertinum that collapsed last year and is still secured with scaffolding. The council allocated 5.7 million crowns for the repair of this section of the walls.
