The town of Hluboká nad Vltavou is planning a new indoor hockey stadium. It is set to be built on the site of the current open-air ice rink from 2000. The architectural studio A8000 has designed a bright, transparent hall that honors the character of the place and the views of the historic panorama of the town, which boasts the neo-Gothic Hluboká Castle. The project for the new stadium has been consulted by architects with former and current NHL players.

Hockey has a century-old tradition in Hluboká nad Vltavou. The first games were played on the frozen Vltava River. Players would carve out a floating rink in the ice. Since the 1950s, people have skated at the open-air ice rink without refrigeration. Everything depended on the whims of the weather. The rink with an artificial ice surface named after the famous hockey defender Miroslav Dvořák was built here in 2000. This was a joy not only for the 180 members of the HC Knights Hluboká club, which today unites hockey players from the youngest hopes to veterans. However, in the near future, Hluboká nad Vltavou could see another sporting improvement.

"The hockey tradition in Hluboká has long since crossed the boundaries of the town. Today, many former and current NHL players and leading Czech hockey players live here, such as the coach of the Motor ČB club, Jaroslav Mokrý, former hockey players Radek Bělohlav and Stanislav Bednařík, and hockey players Miroslav Dvořák Jr., Petr Bělohlav, or Václav Prospal. Summer camps and preparations are held here. Therefore, we naturally discussed the design of the new stadium with them. The result is a stadium that can effortlessly serve as a training and skating base for the public, promising young athletes, hockey teams, and all sports enthusiasts, but equally as a professional arena in the best sense of the word," describes architect Martin Krupauer from the A8000 studio.

The capacity of the stadium is expected to be up to 1,000 spectators for the University League, which will take place here. An integral part of the new architectural design is the multifunctional use of the hall. It should transform as needed into a space for various social, cultural, and sporting events. Once the ice melts, the stadium will also gain summer use, such as hosting concerts. The design features materials like wood, concrete, glass, and copper, which can be found on the roofs of historic buildings in the area. The structure blends in with its surroundings and highlights them. It appears light, warm, optimistic, and appropriately scaled, which is often not the case with similar constructions.

"We are collaborating with the University of Technology and Economics, which plays in the so-called University League, and we are gradually informing the National Sports Agency about everything. We would like to request a grant from them for the project's implementation. If everything goes well, the indoor ice rink will be another significant infrastructure project serving athletes from the wider area, which will help cultivate both recreational and elite athletes," adds Tomáš Jirsa, the mayor of Hluboká nad Vltavou.

The total project costs are estimated at 156.2 million crowns excluding VAT. Construction could begin as early as next year under the leadership of architects Martin Krupauer, Pavel Kvintus, and Martin Sedmák from A8000.
