Havlíčkův Brod

Havlíčkův Brod - The Havlíčkův Brod Town Hall is preparing to improve the appearance of the city center. The revitalization will concern the historic Havlíčkovo Square and its surroundings, which were impacted by an insensitive reconstruction in the 1970s. This year, experts should agree on changes in traffic, modifications of greenery, or paving. The city will then try to obtain EU grants for the project, the costs of which are estimated in the tens of millions of crowns. This was stated to journalists today by Deputy Mayor Libor Honzárek.

Honzárek indicated that it will not just be about improving the appearance of the center. Havlíčkovo Square exhibits a whole range of defects. Water from the eaves currently flows over the pavement and freezes in winter. People have complained about the slippery pavement for years. "The surface treatment of the roads and sidewalks, as well as the engineering networks, are in very poor condition. The entire subsoil needs to be rectified," the deputy mayor elaborated. Medieval corridors and cellars are located beneath the square.
A few years ago, the city commissioned the first studies. In this year's budget, half a million crowns have been allocated for finalizing the winning proposal. Next year, the remaining documentation should be completed so that the city can apply for a subsidy from Brussels. The preparations will likely be led by a professional group, which will include architects, officials, entrepreneurs, and citizens.
Honzárek expects that the creation of the project will be accompanied by lively discussion, which he also sees as a possible pitfall. "Not only will individual entrepreneurs defend their interests, but individual citizens also have their opinions on how the square should look," he explained.
A conservation area was declared in the city center. Among the historically valuable buildings on Havlíčkovo Square are the Old and New Town Halls, Havlíček's House, where journalist Karel Havlíček Borovský lived, and Stamic's House, which was once inhabited by the family of musician Jan Václav Stamitz. The landmarks include a Baroque plague column and a stone fountain with a statue of Triton.
