Hradec Králové - The city hall of the hundred-thousand-strong Hradec Králové today announced a competition for the conceptual design of a new urban plan for the city. Architects from the Czech Republic and abroad can apply. The proposals must be submitted by the end of May. The results of the competition, which will cost around seven million crowns, should be known by the end of June. Only then will the creation of the actual urban plan follow. This was stated by the city hall spokesperson Václav Svoboda.

The conceptual design is supposed to indicate, for example, whether the city should develop towards the future D11 motorway or south towards nearby Pardubice. The study should also reveal whether a classic industrial zone should be established in Hradec. Such a zone is not included in the current urban plan. So far, the city's development has been directed westward towards the future motorway. The city expects to receive around 30 proposals.
The conceptual design will be evaluated by a professional jury, with the final decision made by the council and the assembly. The city will then announce a separate competition for the actual processing of the urban plan. The winner will have to translate the winning idea into a specific urban plan. The costs of developing the actual urban plan are estimated at 20 million crowns.
The urban plan is a fundamental document for the development of the city. Currently, the city and investors are guided by the urban plan from 2000. Every city in the Czech Republic must develop a new urban plan or revise the current one by the end of 2015. Hradec has decided to create a new plan. This plan will then determine construction in the city for several more decades.
