Prague - The Czech Philharmonic will architecturally modify the entrance space of the Rudolfinum building. It invited several architects and designers, and the jury selected Lenka Míková's project as the winning proposal. According to it, the foyer of the Dvořák Hall will receive a new look, where a small shop used to be and where tourists mostly head during the day and concert-goers in the evening. Today, ČTK was informed about the result of the competition by Jarmila Řehořková on behalf of Czechdesign, which organized the competition for the Czech Philharmonic.
Work on the interior modifications will take place at the end of this year. The value of the contract is 180,000 crowns.
The goal of the architectural competition was to find a solution that would make the entrance space representative and welcoming. In addition to visiting the souvenir shop, people should also be able to see a small exhibition about the history of the building or simply sit and listen to music.
The new design was to respect the character of the historic building and the interior of the Rudolfinum, while also appearing contemporary. The jury chose the winning proposal because of its "humble approach to the historical character of the building and appropriate continuity with the architectural heritage of the 1980s and its significant representative Karel Prager." Prager and his team reconstructed the Rudolfinum building from 1990 to 1992.
"In humility towards the original architecture and the effort to disturb it as little as possible, the material solution also respects this, using primarily surfaces already present in the foyer. The objects placed in the space are covered with polished brass sheets that have a reflective effect," stated the author. The exhibition will be on backlit panels with gold-tinted glass, so that together with the brass sheets, it creates a monolithic whole from a distance. The brass sheets also cover the pedestal and table in the lounges.
The closed competition lasted from November 2018 to this February. The Czech Philharmonic, in cooperation with Czechdesign, approached four architectural and design studios. Besides Míková, they were 0.5 studio, Roháč Stratil Architectural Studio, and Uhlík Architects. Lenka Míková completed her proposal in collaboration with Matyáš Cigler, Martin Surovec, Dominika Balanová, and graphic designer Miroko Maroko.
