Brno - The Museum of the City of Brno aims to revive the confidence of the residents of the South Moravian metropolis through a new exhibition on the history of the Brno Exhibition Center. The opening of the exhibition center in 1928 helped, according to historians, to the emancipation of Brno and sparked a sense of development enthusiasm among its inhabitants. This brief period of time 80 years ago could serve as inspiration and a challenge for the present, the curators believe.
The new exhibition of the Museum of the City of Brno is located in Špilberk Castle and is titled From Dream to Realization. It commemorates both the construction of the exhibition center and the first exhibition of contemporary culture in Czechoslovakia, which received enthusiastic responses.
With the Špilberk exhibition, the curators aim to pull the residents of Brno out of the alleged current lethargy and indifference. "It is an attempt to awaken a similar enthusiasm and pride as our ancestors experienced 80 years ago when they toured the exhibition center and the entire city, which had impeccably prepared for this event in every respect," stated Lenka Kudělková from the museum's department of architecture and urban planning history.
The exhibition of contemporary culture in May 1928 was conceived as a celebration of the achievements of the ten-year-old Czechoslovak Republic in both spiritual and material culture. A special exhibition center was built for this event in Brno-Pisárky, which still thrives and is a pride of the city.
Reactions to the exhibition in 1928 were positive not only due to its content but also because of the architectural and urban design of the exhibition center. The designs for the pavilions and other buildings were created by the leading architects of the time. Many structures still serve their original purpose today.
The exhibition From Dream to Realization, which consists of hundreds of documents, photographs, and other items, will be available to interested visitors starting Thursday in the western wing of Špilberk. It will last until November 9.
