Olomouc - The Dlouhé Stráně pumped storage power plant in the Šumperk region reports a year-on-year increase in visitors for the first half of the year. A unique structural-technical monument was visited by 20,225 people, which is nearly 4,000 more than in the comparable period last year, said Alice Lutišanová, spokesperson for the ČEZ Group for the northern and central Moravia region, to ČTK. Last year, according to her, a record 54,275 visitors came to the plant, which belongs to the ČEZ Group. "The waterworks is located in an attractive area of the Jeseníky Mountains. It also gained public attention due to its first place in the iDnes poll of the 7 Wonders of the Czech Republic," the spokesperson stated. She added that last year's record could be surpassed this year. "In the summer holiday months, the attendance is by far the highest. Last year, in the third quarter, about 27,000 people visited this waterworks, and an even larger increase is expected this summer," Lutišanová added. Visitors to Dlouhé Stráně can explore the underground of the powerplant during tours – the engine rooms with reversible turbines and take a trip to the upper pumping dam. The plant is interesting partly because it has the largest reversible water turbine in Europe. It also has the largest hydraulic head in the Czech Republic and has the highest installed capacity among Czech hydropower plants. In the energy system, Dlouhé Stráně serves both when utilizing surplus energy, which is used for pumping water from the lower to the upper reservoir, and during periods of energy shortages, when the plant can start generating electricity and supplying it to the grid within a few dozen seconds. Construction of the plant, designed by architect Ladislav Konečný, began in 1978. It was put into operation 18 years later.
