The Office of City Architecture of Karlovy Vary (KAM KV°) will celebrate 2 years since its establishment on March 1st. During this time, it has launched and assembled a team of experts who, with their conceptual approach to urban planning, build trust not only with the political representation but also with the professional and general public. Communication with the public and coordination of city-wide significant projects are among the basic pillars of KAM's activities. On Friday, February 28th, KAM will be open to the public from 12 PM, and from 5 PM, culture will be celebrated. What does the seven-member KAM team actually do? “The main task of the office is to create a vision for the city, for example, how it might look in 20 years. This is related to the preparation of conceptual documents, such as the Strategy for Sustainable Development of the City, or the Mobility Plan, which the office co-participates in and for which KAM has organized discussions and workshops with the professional public. Furthermore, it accompanies the process of preparing the Urban Plan, the Manual for Creating Public Spaces, and the entry of the city of Karlovy Vary into the UNESCO organization along with 10 other European cities as part of the Great Spas of Europe nomination,” informs Petr Kropp, who has led KAM for 2 years. “In addition to conceptual long-term projects, we are working on current projects. We issue recommendations on topics requested by the city or on topics we identify and regard as important. Over the past two years, we have continuously worked on 35 different larger projects. Specific examples of our work include the most important buildings in the city, such as the Hot Spring Colonnade, the Ceramic School, as well as buildings in more distant parts of the city, such as Poštovní Elementary School, the ceremonial hall, and significant public spaces in the city, such as Svobody Square near St. Mary Magdalene Church, the forecourt of the Market Hall, Christmas markets, etc.,” added Jana Boukalová from KAM. Communication with the public is indispensable for meaningful professional activities of KAM. The aim is to stimulate citizens' interest in their city and gather specific suggestions for its development. For the residents of the city, KAM organizes interesting and educational events, whether they are lectures on urban topics, guided walks through the city, exhibitions, discussions, and workshops on various themes.
Come celebrate with KAM For its 2nd anniversary, KAM has prepared a pleasant accompanying program. “On Friday, February 28th, from 12 PM, the entire space of our office will be open to the public, who can come to get to know us and our work. At 5 PM we will start celebrating – after last year's success, we have invited 4 slam poets – modern poets, and after them, the acoustic duo Dohromady Štyri Nohy will play and sing for us. We really have something to look forward to,” invites Jana Boukalová. More information about KAM and its events can be found on the website www.kamkv.cz.
