České Budějovice - The architectural competition for the extension of the South Bohemian Scientific Library was won by the proposal from the Brno studio Kuba & Pilař architects. Their solution will allow librarians to freely access over 130,000 volumes. Ivo Kareš, the director of the library, told ČTK today. The library will apply for a grant of 123 million CZK from the Integrated Regional Operational Program (IROP), construction is expected to begin in 2019.

The jury selected from six proposals and deemed the winning proposal to best meet the task of considering both the architectural and urban solutions as well as the operation of the library on Lidická Street. The architects also had to respect the budget for the construction.

The second place in the competition went to the study by the studio Ivan Kroupa architects, and the third place to the Prague studio Projektil architects. The library will display the competition studies from February 13 to February 24.

"The winning proposal expands the library with a lapidary form of a levitating single-storey extension, which is connected to the original building only at the location of the current entrance," said Petra Mašínová, the library's spokesperson, to ČTK.

With the extension, the library will expand by approximately 1,200 m². According to the winning study, the exterior facade of the extension will be made up of prefabricated vertical glass lamellae with printing that will shield the activities inside and outside the building. Similar lamellae is said to be on the facade of the National Technical Library in Prague, according to the organizer of the competition, architect Mirek Vodák.

The extension will include an accessible entrance. The study also suggests an improvement of the surrounding public space, a new parking lot, and transportation connection to Lidická Street.

The South Bohemian Scientific Library is established by the South Bohemian Region, which will allocate approximately 50 million CZK for its operation this year. The library has 18,361 registered readers, and according to Mašínová, 272,500 people visited its premises last year, of which 23,500 attended cultural events.
