Brno – The trolleybus depot in Brno-Komín will be demolished, and a new one will be built in its place, as approved today by the Brno city council. This is the most suitable solution considering the poor structural condition of the less than 30-year-old building. This is stated in a press release from the Brno city hall. However, before the depot is demolished, the transport company will modernize the depot in Slatina and increase its capacity to have sufficient facilities for ensuring trolleybus operation.

It has been known for several years that the trolleybus depot in Komín is in poor structural condition. The city, which owned the Komín depot unlike the other depots, postponed the reconstruction. Only this year did the situation reach a point where the upper floor cannot be used, and a large number of trolleybuses must remain outside overnight instead of being under a roof. Some trolleybuses have been relocated to Husovice, and the transport company incurs additional costs every day.

The company also had the possibility of refurbishing the depot assessed, but this option was found to be worse than building a new one.

The modernization of the Slatina depot is already being prepared by the transport company. It serves both buses and trolleybuses, and thanks to the reconstruction, the capacity for trolleybuses will increase and their facilities will improve. Construction could begin next year, with estimated costs of 1.2 billion crowns. The city will transfer 578 million from the project of the third phase of the Pisárky depot reconstruction, 510 million is expected to be obtained from the Operational Program for Transport, and 116 million would be financed from the budget. The new depot in Komín could be built between 2026 and 2027. "We expect the city to contribute 86 million crowns to the financing. The transport company will also try to secure funding from the same operational program as in the previous case," said councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS). The general director of the transport company, Miloš Havránek, told ČTK a month ago that the modernization of the Slatina depot and the construction of the new depot in Komín could total two billion crowns.

Brno has the largest trolleybus operation in the Czech Republic, operating over 130 vehicles, about half of which are articulated trolleybuses.
