Brno - A set of four small tables will return to the former government villa of Stiassny, which is one of the functionalist gems of Brno. In the past, they probably adorned one of the ladies' rooms. These serving tables are interesting because they fit into each other. For decades, they lay unnoticed in the depository of Bítov Castle in Znojmo, said Zdeněk Musil from the Brno office of the National Heritage Institute to ČTK today.

"The tables will now need to be restored. They will be taken care of by students from the Brno higher school of restoration," the spokesperson said. The tables will return to the villa in a few months. Heritage experts are currently also looking for other original furnishings from the former government villa in their depositories.
The functionalist building was commissioned in 1927 by the textile industrialist Alfred Stiassny according to the design of the architect Arnošt Weisner. During the occupation, it was confiscated by the Gestapo from the original owners, and after the war, it remained in state possession. In addition to Czechoslovak presidents, figures like Fidel Castro have stayed there. According to experts, the Brno government villa is just as interesting as the most famous Brno functionalist building - the Tugendhat villa.
The monument institute took over the building last year. It will be accessible to the public only randomly. A center will be established there to preserve documentation and provide information on the reconstruction of monuments from the last century. The restoration of these buildings requires completely different procedures than the restoration of classical historical sites. The center is expected to facilitate the work of institutions restoring modern monuments.
