Prague - Thousands of people visited the 15th edition of the Designblok festival last week. The organizers do not yet have exact attendance numbers, but according to the ticket office, more than ten thousand people visited one of the event centers at the Nákladové nádraží Žižkov. Other visitors flowed into Openstudia in Kafka's house and to the Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace, where exhibitions were held at the intersection of art and design, showcasing the work of the best Czech designers alongside international guests. The fourth space of the festival was the Church of St. Simon and Jude, where fashion shows took place from Wednesday as part of the Designblok Premier Fashion Week. Superstudio at the station offered presentations of manufacturers and companies as well as selections from Czech design schools. In the autumn sun, many visitors filled the former storage halls with presentations from traders, but many also took interest in the buildings and the railway platform itself; the industrial area recently became a cultural monument and awaits its new use. This year, the designers presented creations primarily based on icons, which are the main theme of this year's design exhibition. People could see blown glass lighting shaped like the silhouettes of chandeliers from famous opera houses, furniture inspired by global design from the 60s, and renovated chairs and tables from the 40s. Iconic pieces of furniture from the 30s to 60s are the main theme of the Classics + Corian exhibition, which showcases renovated pieces of historical furniture. Designers Václav Mlynář and Jakub Pollág replaced their parts with new pieces made of Corian, a material that is easily moldable and resistant to wear and tear. "The replaced parts of the furniture are exact copies of their predecessors; they are spirits reminding of the age of individual objects." People could view the Classics + Corian exhibition at the cargo station, which was installed directly in one of the train cars.
