Cheb - The city of Cheb plans to announce an urban planning competition for the utilization of the former barracks area at Zlatý vrch. Next year, the restriction on commercial use of the area will expire. Therefore, the city will be looking for a partner to invest money into the area, said the mayor of Cheb, Pavel Vanoušek (CSSD), to ČTK. "In the future, we would like to create a commercial company, into which the city would invest land and the investor would invest money," said Vanoušek. The costs for the revitalization of the area will be high, and the city would not be able to cover it alone. The city of Cheb acquired the barracks for free in 2001, but with the condition that only non-commercial activities can be established in the area. Three years ago, the Ministry of Finance rejected the request to lift the restriction. There have been several plans for utilization in the past, but all ended due to a lack of funding. For example, it was considered to build a new secondary school building where the Integrated Secondary School of Cheb would relocate, and other proposals included a Czech-German police academy or the relocation of technical services. According to Deputy Mayor Tomáš Linda (ODS), this is an attractive part of the city. "It is close to the center with a view of the Cheb Castle," said Linda, who noted that some builders are waiting for the opportunity to invest in housing in the former barracks. Theoretically, the area could provide space for apartment buildings as well as the construction of family houses. Further proposals should come precisely from the urban study. The barracks area is also strategic for the city as it provides access to other development lands, such as in Špitálský vrch.
