Cheb - The city of Cheb will announce an architectural competition for the use of the former barracks on Zlatý vrch. Following the proposal from councilors, the task will also include the streets below the area. Although the city has owned the barracks for ten years, the ban on their commercial use will only expire this year, Mayor Pavel Vanoušek (ČSSD) told reporters today. The proposal for the announcement of the architectural study was already on the table for the councilors, but they postponed it. "The councilors wanted the task to relate to the intersection of Ašská Street with Vodní and Božena Němcová Streets," clarified Deputy Mayor Tomáš Linda (ODS). According to him, the councilors should reconsider the proposal in September. The architectural study competition should, according to Linda, be held in two rounds. "In the first round, the designers could submit architectural proposals, and from those, the committee would select several of the best in the second round to be developed into a detailed architectural study," stated Linda. According to him, this way the city could utilize good ideas from multiple proposed solutions. The barracks, with an accounting value of 56 million crowns, were acquired by the city free of charge ten years ago. Although several ideas for non-commercial use have arisen over the years, none have been realized due to high costs. Collaboration with a private investor was also hindered by state blockage. Nevertheless, this is an area that, due to its location, offers the potential for residential development.
