Brno – The post office building at Brno's main train station, designed by architect Bohuslav Fuchs, is set to change ownership in mid-October. Czech Post, which owns the functionalist building, has decided to sell it in an electronic auction scheduled for October 13. Ivo Vysoudil from Czech Post informed CTK.
"Czech Post has been addressing the future of this building for some time. The building is unsuitable for Czech Post, economically unviable, and unnecessarily oversized. Currently, two-thirds of the building is unused. We have a total of three public halls in the building, which are serviced separately, thus increasing our operating costs," Vysoudil stated.
Although the sale is expected to take place in October this year, the branch will remain open at least until mid-next year. Czech Post is exploring options to relocate the branch to other premises near the main train station, which is an important transportation hub.
"We are currently negotiating with the Letmo shopping center to keep the branch close to the transportation hub and both the bus and train stations. The anticipated relocation is planned for the second quarter of next year," Vysoudil added. To prevent excessive pressure on the new branch, the post office will establish another branch on the opposite side of the city, in the Šumavská Tower premises in the Královo Pole district.
The station post office, according to Bohuslav Fuchs' design, was built at the end of the 1930s as a provisional structure. Even then, there were considerations about relocating the Brno train station, which is why Fuchs proposed a lightweight steel structure for the building, making it easy to disassemble. A rarity of the building is the paternoster lift, which the post office had repaired to operational condition in 2013. In the 1980s, the building underwent partial repairs, but currently, it requires a complete reconstruction.
