Brno – The city wants to preserve part of the houses in the former military area at Kraví hora in Brno for now, and plans to repair them. A smaller portion will be demolished due to their poor condition, and in their place, there will be a smaller park. At a briefing after the meeting of council members, the city's representative for strategic development, Martin Příborský (ODS), informed about this today. The so-called "likusáky" are used by artists, for example, as studios. However, according to the building authority, the houses do not meet fire safety standards, and the city had to close them based on that.

Likusáky are wooden houses that are approximately 80 years old, with around 20 located at Kraví hora near the observatory, about a quarter of which are owned by the city; the others belong to the Brno University of Technology. The February call from the building authority did not concern the latter, although they are in practically the same technical condition. A community of about 300 artists, visual artists, sculptors, and musicians has been functioning in the likusáky for several years.

The city wants to preserve the studios and ateliers, plans to repair three likusáky and obtain permits for their use. The remaining two owned by the city, which served as storage spaces, will need to be demolished due to their poor condition, according to the city administration.

"An important part of our intention is to obtain binding statements, primarily from the fire department and health authorities. Subsequently, we could begin with the repairs. We understand the uncertainty in which the creatives operating at Kraví hora currently find themselves; therefore, we have decided to extend the notice periods for these people through addenda to the termination of the contract," Příborský noted. He added that the notice period is newly set until the end of the year. According to him, the addenda also declare the tenants' willingness to participate in potential modifications.

"This is a compromise solution. In the long term, a park should be created here. The area is designated as green space in the land-use plan," Příborský stated.

The chairman of the Czech Art Union and one of the representatives of the community at Kraví hora, David Vlk, stated that the community welcomes the city's efforts to address the artists' uncertainty. "We are ready to participate in discussions with the building authority and other relevant bodies, and also contribute financially to the repairs," Vlk said.
