Brno - One of the buildings in the Masaryk University Faculty of Arts complex in Brno is gradually turning into a pile of rubble. Since the beginning of April, builders have been demolishing partitions and dismantling the roof. Heavy demolition equipment arrived on site on Sunday. A new building with six above-ground and two basement floors will rise where the current B2 block stands, said Masaryk University spokesperson Tereza Fojtová today to ČTK.

The costs of the construction work amount to 222.5 million crowns. The total cost of the project named the Center for the Support of Humanities (CARLA) will reach 470 million crowns. The original project accounted for an amount 100 million higher, but the university received a lower offer in the tender. The school obtained most of the funding from the European Union.
In the basement of the new building, the faculty will obtain a parking lot and a book depository connected to the neighboring faculty library. Above-ground floors will feature classrooms and facilities for doctoral students.
The project also includes the renovation of other buildings and the adjustment of the courtyard. Reconstruction will be completed in August 2014. The faculty has needed a major renovation for several years. Politicians have repeatedly promised money but never provided it. The B2 block has been closed for a long time due to its emergency condition.
The Brno Faculty of Arts is located in a heterogeneous complex of buildings not far from the city center. The hallways and classrooms of some departments look the same as they did 30 years ago.
Renovation is also awaiting the neighboring buildings A and B1 from the second half of the 19th century. They originally served as an orphanage. The faculty began to use them gradually between 1919 and 1923. The B2 building was created in 1922 as a temporary structure and was supposed to be replaced by a new building within ten years. It ultimately served until recently.
