Brno - Brno has received a grant of over one billion crowns for the construction of a tram line from Osová to the Bohunice campus. The total cost will be more than 1.4 billion crowns. The funds must be utilized by 2022 or 2023, with a decision still pending. By that time, the track is also expected to be completed, said the general director of the transport company Miloš Havránek at a press conference today.
The track, which has been in preparation for several years, will measure 900 meters and will largely run through a tunnel to go underneath Jihlavská Street. It will simplify travel for thousands of people who daily head to the campus, which has been rapidly developing over the past 15 years. About 40,000 people commute there every day. The campus includes university facilities, a shopping center, a university hospital, and office buildings.
"We have issued a zoning decision and are currently seeking a contractor through a tender who will also ensure the issuance of a building permit. Unfortunately, the process has been delayed at the antitrust office," Havránek said.
In the future, line 8 is expected to provide transportation, which will branch off from the Bohunice line. There will be a so-called terminal with a turnaround at the campus, which requires the operation of bi-directional trams. Future plans also include the construction of a cable car to the campus from the Pisárky depot.
