Brno - Brno still does not know how much money it will pay for the construction of kilometers of new tram lines to service the new main railway station. It is expected to start operating in 11 years, according to current representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Brno. The costs will, according to the spokesperson of the municipality, Filip Poňuchálek, be part of the outputs from studies or individual projects. He informed ČTK. More trams will also be needed.
Plans for how the new station should be served were presented a month ago at a conference by the transport director of the transport company, Jan Seitl. From the north, access to the station will be via Plotní and Bulvár streets, that is, a street that is yet to be created. A line is to be constructed on Masná Street to serve the northeastern part of the city, which will intersect Plotní, Hladíková, and also Křenová streets, and will continue roughly along the Svitava River up to Cejl to the Tkalcovská stop. The new line is also planned to continue westward from Hybešova Street across Nové sady under the viaduct and then turn right towards Bulvár. New lines are also planned in the south. To the southwest, there will be a route extending to Vídeňská, and a line is also to be created to the south to Dolní Heršpice. According to calculations from the transport company, tram traffic performance will increase by 56 percent by the end of the next decade.
According to Poňuchálek, the preparation of new lines will be initiated depending on changes and development in specific areas. He stated that the connection between Hybešova - Bulvár - new station - Plotní has a final zoning decision as part of the building complex of urban infrastructure related to the reconstruction of the railway hub.
The last newly opened line from Osová to Bohunice Hospital took more than eight years to construct from the announcement of the investment intention, involving nearly a kilometer of track, partly in a tunnel. From the approval of the investment intention to extend the Bystrc line by more than a kilometer, ten years passed, and construction has not yet begun. "In case of a real decision, rather than long-term considerations and assessments, this entire process can be shortened to five years," Poňuchálek stated.
Similarly, new trolleybus lines are to be created to serve the new station. Poňuchálek stated that "the new station must operate with an expanded skeleton of public transport." For example, the bus station at Zvonařka waited more than 40 years for tram rerouting to it after its opening.
It is still unclear what kind of renewal and expansion of the vehicle fleet the new lines will require. "The transport company anticipates a gradual increase in the tram fleet after 2030, which is now beyond the current vehicle fleet renewal strategy," Poňuchálek noted.
The city intends to draw on subsidies for investments in the development and expansion of public transport. "Similar to before, the city anticipates utilizing grant titles for infrastructure investments from both regional sources and their equivalents, as well as newly utilizing grant titles for the development of the Trans-European Transport Network TEN-T. Brno is included in the currently revised EU transport policy among the so-called nodal cities of the TEN-T network, and complementary urban mobility will also be supported in these nodes," stated the spokesperson of the municipality.
