Brno - Brno will build a kindergarten in the Kamechy housing estate in the Bystrc district for 76 million crowns. The six classrooms will accommodate 170 children, said the mayor's deputy Richard Mrázek (ANO) to reporters today. There is already one kindergarten in the housing estate, but its capacity is insufficient. Therefore, parents wanted the construction of a second one. According to Mrázek, the city will be able to convert the kindergarten into a primary school in the future if necessary. The construction is expected to begin in 2017.
The city will apply for a grant for the construction of the kindergarten. It could receive up to 90 percent from the European Union. "The project takes into account the possibility of changes in the demographic curve in the Bystrc district. Therefore, the planned building could serve as a primary school after its conversion," said Mrázek.
The kindergarten will have its own kitchen in addition to the six classrooms. It should be capable of preparing meals for both the first kindergarten in Kamechy and the new facility. The investment will also include the construction of a parking lot and a fenced school garden with a playground.
Brno has nearly 140 kindergartens attended by approximately 11,500 children. In recent years, the city has been trying to increase the number of places in kindergartens. Since the beginning of the millennium, about 2,500 places have been added. The city often gained these through construction modifications, expansions of existing capacities, or the construction of new facilities. At the turn of the millennium, over 8,000 children attended kindergartens in Brno, and 15 years later, their number exceeds 11,500. Nevertheless, there are parents who do not have a place for their children. Often, these are children under three years old. Parents in the Kamechy housing estate frequently face placement issues.
