Brno - In a few years, people should be able to travel to the university hospital in Brno-Bohunice and the neighboring Masaryk University campus by tram. According to the city hall, the connection by buses and trolleybuses is only temporary and it is necessary to build a track that has a higher capacity. Experts have so far determined that a track can be constructed in the area. They are now looking for the optimal location of stops and solving other details in a more detailed technical study, said Josef Veselý (KDU-ČSL), the chairman of the city council's transport committee to ČTK. "It is beyond discussion that this area has such a turnover of passengers that without tram transport, further servicing of the area is a utopia," said Veselý. According to him, trolleybus and bus transport can be considered provisional. The track to the hospital and campus will lead off a branch from the Osová stop. The approximately 900-meter-long connection will run partly underground, under Mikuláškovým náměstím. According to Veselý, engineers have already solved how to cross the busy Jihlavská street. They are now considering the end of the track - determining whether a loop will be built on site or if the track will end with a switch. They are also fine-tuning the placement of stops. "It is important where we place the boarding and alighting points. So that it naturally leads people to the tram," he explained. According to the councilor, the study is expected to be completed in March. Meanwhile, the city hall is also preparing an amendment to the urban plan that would include the future track in the map of Brno. The costs of building the track have not yet been estimated by the designers according to Veselý. However, the city hall reportedly wants to build the tracks partly with the help of private capital. The location is considered a development area, with plans to build a sports hall connected to a shopping center there.
