Brno – The city district of Brno-Líšeň is preparing a reconstruction of Karl IV Square. It is estimated to cost tens of millions of crowns, said deputy mayor of Líšeň, Martin Příborský, to ČTK today. The city hall announced an architectural competition for the reconstruction, and the first prize was awarded to the Brno studio P. P. Architects.
The winner was decided by a professional jury. "The completion of the architectural competition for the design of the new appearance of Karl IV Square is an important step on the long road to restoring the traditional heart of Old Líšně as a fully-fledged center of social life. It concludes years of discussions about which direction to take," said Příborský.
According to him, however, this is just the beginning of a complicated path to the actual realization, and the proposed solution may not be final. "It will depend on many factors, changes to the zoning plan, resolution of ownership relations, and of course on funding possibilities. The details of the winning proposal will be the subject of ongoing public discussion and may further evolve," Příborský said. Part of the money will be sought by the city district through grants, and part from the city.
The concept is based on a prominent north-south axis leading from the church to a new building in the northern part. The western side has a hardened area adjacent to the road. On the eastern side, there should be a park. There could also be an underground parking garage in the square.
