Brno - Brno is preparing further phases of flood protection measures on the Svratka River for 1.67 billion crowns, with the costs largely covered by grants from the European Union. Brno's mayor, Markéta Vaňková, stated in a press release today that measures will be created between Riviéra swimming pool and the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street, which will prevent floods, while also revitalizing the watercourse and contributing to its accessibility to the public.
Brno's council approved two points concerning the specified phases. One pertains to the preparation for measures in the area of the former TJ Favorit organization on Bauerova Street, and the other approves the loan of land from the property of the Czech Republic managed by the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic. "Thanks to excellent cooperation with the management of the Road and Motorway Directorate, the contract and all its details were created smoothly. The city will be able to use the land around the Svratka for the construction of flood protection measures for a period of 36 months from the start of the actual construction. During this period, a series of measures will be developed from the Riviéra swimming pool to the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street, which will prevent floods, revitalize the watercourse, and contribute to its accessibility to the general public," Vaňková stated.
The borrowed land will assist in the implementation of flood protection measures, mainly as all necessary equipment will travel directly to the riverbed via this land. Flood protection measures will affect the areas of Pisárky, Štýřice, and Old Brno. The Svratka will be newly accessible from both sides, bike and pedestrian paths will be created, and a new colonnade building will be constructed. At the same time, earth embankments will be created, the riverbed will be loosened, and engineering networks will be relocated.
According to Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), another step towards the successful start of the flood protection construction on the Svratka is the area of the former TJ Favorit. "The city purchased the land in 2019. After the termination of all rental contracts, Brno must proceed to clear this area so that the revitalization of the river can begin. The removal of the dump, invasive vegetation, and all other unsatisfactory structures will be ensured by the Public Greenery of the City of Brno, which has estimated the work at 916,770 crowns excluding VAT. At the same time, the area is now monitored to prevent the creation of additional dumps," Hladík stated.
