Brno - Brno is preparing modifications to Mendel Square with estimated costs of 42 million crowns. The work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2022, when the city will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of genetics, Gregor Johann Mendel. The mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková (ODS), told reporters today. According to her, the square needs a bigger change, but there is no time for it now. The planned modifications will not block the complete transformation of the area.

Today, the council selected a company that will prepare the project documentation and necessary surveys. In seven months, project documentation for issuing a joint construction permit and for the actual execution of the construction should be created. "The work will increase pedestrian space in the square, we will enable barrier-free movement, and there will be improvements to the sales area," said the mayor's deputy, Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).

According to him, new trees will also be planted, and measures will be implemented to better manage water. The work on paving the surfaces and other tasks will be coordinated with the relocation of the steam pipeline, which Teplárny Brno plans to do in the area next year. The opening of the square is expected to coincide with the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Mendel's birth, who worked in Brno.

In the future, Brno plans a complete transformation of the square. "Mendel Square is one of the transport hubs in the city used by thousands of people. To make this space functional and representative, we had a study of possible changes prepared. However, the planned repairs will not block the future comprehensive transformation of the area," added Vaňková.
