Brno - The final days are counting down for graphic designers from around the world who want to apply for awards at this year’s Brno Biennale. The prestigious industry event accepts applications until January 15, free of charge via the biennale website. This was announced by Michaela Banzetová, spokesperson for the organizing Moravian Gallery in Brno. The Biennale is traditionally one of the main cultural events of even-numbered years in Brno. It is also among the oldest and largest showcases of graphic design in the world. The previous edition, which focused on school projects, was a record in terms of attendance. 40,000 people attended the three palaces of the Moravian Gallery. This year, the biennale is again opening up to professionals. Their submitted works will first be evaluated by a selection jury. "They will primarily assess approaches and solutions to specific assignments and the aesthetic and functional quality of artifacts, all with regard to the spatial limitations of the exhibition halls," Banzetová stated. The laureates will then be decided by an international jury, which will convene in Brno in mid-June. The organizers plan to announce the results on June 16, when they will also open the biennale exhibitions. The main exhibition will traditionally consist of the competition entries. In the exhibition "Which mirror do you want to lick?" an international team will present works at the intersection of reality and fiction. They will be displayed not only in the exhibition halls but also in the streets of the city and other locations. Zdeněk Ziegler, the author of extraordinary film posters, will have a profile exhibition. At the last biennale in 2014, the jury did not award the Grand Prix. Partial awards went to Czech Pavla Nešverová, Swede Emma Olanders, Japanese Daisuke Kašiwa, and the Dutch school Werkplaats Typographie. Four of its graduates will prepare a solo exhibition in Brno this year, expressing their subjective view on contemporary graphic design. The starting point of the exhibition will be the extensive collection of graphic design held by the Moravian Gallery in Brno, which has been expanded since the inception of the biennale in the 1960s.
