Brno - The Faculty of Law in Brno has opened its reconstructed historical hall from 1932 after a year of work. The reconstruction cost Masaryk University 6.6 million crowns. The renovation has partially returned the space to its original appearance from the time of the building's creation and made it accessible, said university spokesperson Tereza Fojtová today.

The building is a protected monument, so the school consulted the restoration process with heritage experts. The new wooden paneling is in the same shade of brown that was present before the war. Repairs of other wooden elements and the refurbishment of metal elements and light fixtures were also consulted with heritage experts.
However, visitors most often notice the large mural by Antonín Procházka, which adorns the front of the hall. It is a canvas measuring 13 by 7.5 meters depicting Prometheus bringing fire to humanity. "It has been restored and preserved several times already. During the war, it was hidden from the Nazis under a pile of coal, making its restoration necessary even then. An expert has now discovered both local and extensive damage to the paint layers, which he subsequently repaired," Fojtová explained.
The hall will again be used for diploma ceremonies starting September 15; during the renovation, the university utilized the Scala cinema, which it has rented from the city. "Now, students in wheelchairs will be able to come to the Faculty of Law to collect their diplomas, all the way to the stage," said faculty secretary Blanka Přikrylová.
Renovation of the library in the basement of the faculty is still ongoing and will not be completed until spring. During the work at the end of June, workers found the university's cornerstone, which is expected to be displayed in the library after the completion of the renovations.
