Brno - The Břetislav Bakala Hall in Brno is connected to modern heating and ventilation systems, eliminating the main reason for its long-term closure. Journalists visited the space today, which is discussed as a possible future home of the Bolka Polívka Theater. According to the manager, the hall also has new lighting. For future use, better window shading needs to be resolved, for example. Currently, there is no stage or projection equipment in the hall.

The hall in the so-called White House on Žerotínovo Square was closed for several years mainly due to outdated ventilation and heating systems, which were previously connected to a steam line and now to hot water. Modern equipment has already been installed in the basement, capable of heating the hall in winter and cooling it in summer.

The theater could theoretically use the still vacant hall, which has 300 upholstered seats, as well as the adjacent foyer, smaller hall, and office. The entire space is potentially accessible from two sides - either from the polyclinic lobby or from the other side from the school and café.

The private Bolka Polívka Theater is currently based in a municipal building on Jakubské Square; however, the roof of the hall needs repair. Because of this, the city is looking for an alternative space for the theater. As one option, the city suggested that Polívka share the Reduta building with the National Theater Brno. However, the management of the National Theater Brno disagreed with this. Another possibility is the Bakala Hall. Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) noted on Tuesday that this option still requires further technical adjustments, and the hall would likely not be available immediately at the beginning of the next season, which will be a jubilee - the thirtieth for the Bolka Polívka Theater.

"If we manage to handle the construction and technical adjustments, the spaces would suit us," Polívka told ČTK on Tuesday.

The hall is part of a former administrative building of the city’s KSČ committee from the 1970s, which mainly serves as a polyclinic. The magistrate previously considered selling or exchanging the entire White House. However, those transactions did not happen. Architecture experts were concerned about the demolition of the building, which, although associated with the normalization period and the totalitarian power of that time in Brno, has aesthetic value according to specialists. It is considered a good example of modernist architecture and has been preserved in its authentic state.

"It creatively responded to current foreign events, especially the post-war works of Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer," states the Brno Architectural Manual.
