Brno - Archaeologists will begin surveying the Vojtova site in Brno in mid-March, where residential buildings are planned for the future. Prehistoric finds as well as part of the Brno cemetery are expected on the site, said David Merta from Brno's Archaie to ČTK. This week, Brno city councilors supported the archaeological survey. The area is currently used as a parking lot during hockey matches of the Komet. The guards warn that a traffic collapse now threatens.

At each significant event, the guards open the parking lot and direct up to 400 cars to it. "On average, two to three people travel in each car to the hockey game. Therefore, the change will affect about a thousand visitors at each match. There won't be enough parking spaces for vehicles in the entire wider area around the hall. Therefore, we cannot recommend anything other than arriving by public transport," said the director of the Brno City Police, Luboš Oprchal.

The guards also point out that unauthorized parking in courtyards and on grassy areas cannot be tolerated. Improperly parked cars complicate life for people living near the arena.

Archaeologists expect finds from both prehistoric and medieval periods at the site. The Celts probably had a fortified homestead there. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the place functioned as the economic support of the medieval Brno castle. In 1866 or 1870, the old Brno cemetery was expanded into today's construction site, which was closed in 1883.

The city plans to build a house with 73 starter apartments and a house with a care service featuring 43 apartments on the site. It will also include public spaces, and a park is part of the project. The city anticipates an investment of 280 million crowns.

In a rectangular area of 16,000 square meters, there have never been permanent buildings; the last company operating here was one engaged in truck transport, which overloaded the area with freight vehicles. Surrounding the site are residential buildings, the Moravian Slavia stadium, and former garages of the transport company Grmelova. The area will likely take on a new appearance by 2019.
