High School of Art in Basel by Morger + Dettli

On the southeast edge of Basel towards Münchenstein lies the originally enclosed fifty-hectare industrial and warehouse area Dreispitz, which is gradually being integrated into the urban structure of Basel. It attracts gallery owners who are building repositories here, and artists who have their studios. There are also opportunities for interesting living and artistic education. The largest addition to Dreispitz so far is the campus of the University of Art and Design (HGK FHNW), which was completed this September. The authors of the nearly fifty-meter-high silver tower are the Basel studio Morger + Dettli, which won the architectural competition with their design seven years ago.
All teaching spaces, workshops, studios, and facilities have been successfully accommodated within a ten-story tower with a footprint of 37 x 37 meters. The wall-bearing system is complemented by pivoting column supports arranged along the outer shell. The ceilings are made of 70 cm high reinforced concrete prefabricates. The asymmetrical placement of the core containing all vertical communications and technical infrastructure allows for a flexible arrangement of individual floors, from small office cells to spacious studios. On the ground floor, there is a foyer with a café at the entrance. Above it lies an auditorium and lecture rooms. The third floor is designated for photography/video fields. The highest floor belongs to the library, which offers a unique view of Basel.
The authors intentionally kept it simple so that the artistic activities taking place inside could shine. The individual floors are either set in pure white or in black tones. At the same time, the number of materials was reduced to bare concrete walls and floors, which contrast with translucent textile curtains.
On Friday, January 9, 2015, there will be an open house at the school starting at 12:00 PM, where upon entry you will receive soup with bread, and at 1:00, 2:30, and 4:00 PM, the individual study fields will be presented in succession.
