Last week, the first of a total of five stadiums for the XXX Olympic Games 2012 was completed in London. The velodrome was designed by the local firm Hopkins Architects, which won the contract in a competition four years ago. Michael Hopkins's office has many years of experience with the realization of sports buildings. Construction of the hall began in March 2009. The hyperbolic paraboloid roof transmits internal dynamics to the adjacent park, where other athletes ride along the nearby cycling tracks and undulating hills. The 6,000-seat hall is expected to become a new symbol of the Olympic Park. The curved roof looks different from every angle. The shape of the roof is derived from the geometry of the racing tracks and aims to express the tension of cycling competitions. The steel structure is clad externally in slender boards of red cedar wood. The upper skylights run above the racing tracks in a roof with double curvature. The London Olympic Hall was completed almost 18 months before the start of the games. The lightweight self-supporting structure without internal supports allows spectators uninterrupted views of the cycling competitions.
