Washington - Plans for the construction of a monumental national memorial honoring former American President Dwight Eisenhower were published in Washington on Thursday. Part of
the proposal by the famous architect Frank Gehry includes, among other things, the erection of 13 columns 25 meters high. These are intended to support three large "tapestries" made of steel mesh, on which important moments from Eisenhower's career will be depicted.
The project will cost one hundred million dollars and is expected to be completed within five years. However, it has not yet been approved by the federal authorities.
"Like many people in the past, we did not realize the significant things this man did for this country," Gehry stated.
Eisenhower's grandson David is also overseeing the memorial's design and is reportedly enthusiastic about Gehry's plans.
Plans for the construction of the national memorial to Eisenhower began to take shape ten years ago. Four years ago, a site was chosen - near the national air and space museum, from where there is a view of the Capitol. Eisenhower's memorial will be Gehry's first work in Washington.
